There are grand hotels, and then there is the Gritti. It sits right on the Grand Canal at Santa Maria del Giglio, a palazzo of the 15th and 16th centuries tied to Doge Andrea Gritti, and it has taken guests since the end of the 1800s. Hemingway wrote here. What stays with you afterward is the water at the front door and the dome of the Salute across the canal.

🏛 The Palazzo

The building wears its age well. Frescoed ceilings, silk on the walls, Murano glass, and antiques that would not look out of place in a museum. Marriott's Luxury Collection restored it in 2013 without scrubbing away the patina, so it still feels like a Venetian palace someone happens to live in rather than a hotel lobby.

The Gritti terrace is reason enough to book a table even if you are staying elsewhere. White linen sits right at the water, the Salute rising across the canal, vaporetti and the odd gondola sliding past while you eat. Breakfast here is one of the great Venetian mornings.

💡 Worth Knowing

The location is as central as Venice gets, a few minutes on foot to Piazza San Marco one way and the Accademia the other, with a water-taxi landing at the door. It is a splurge and it knows it, but for a special night in Venice there is little to compare.
